A Home Biodiesel Processor?

Probably the most amazing thing about biodiesel is not that it can provide an excellent alternate energy source to replace diesel fuel, but that a biodiesel processor can be installed in one’s own home and any person so inclined can convert vegetable oil into fuel. Yes, you CAN make biodiesel at home!

For the uninitiated, biodiesel is a fuel that is created by converting organic matter into diesel. The previously mentioned vegetable oil is a common base organic matter that biodiesel fuel is made from, but other properties like algae are used as well. Since there is a lack of multi-national companies operating a biodiesel processor that would provide the basis for natural fuel expansion, some more enterprising inventors have created a mini biodiesel processor that can be used by anyone to create a limited amount of fuel.

Basically, all one needs to do is mix vegetable oil, alcohol and a catalyst agent into the biodiesel processor. Within the biodiesel a chemical reaction will take place that will create the diesel substitute in a matter of hours. When the fuel process is completed, the “per gallon” cost of the new fuel will be significantly lower than gasoline. A savings of 60% or more is not uncommon. While some may accurately point out the costs involved with purchasing oil, the reality is that one could acquire discarded oil from food establishments. This would provide a free source of the organic cooking oil one would need, thus increasing savings to the fullest.

While there are some that may consider having a biodiesel processor in one’s basement to be a slightly kooky venture, the fact of the matter is that alternative fuel will eventually become a large part of the energy landscape of the future so exploring options in that world are highly advised.
